These birds capitalize on a quick breeding season and usually have young out by mid-July in most cases. Most REAL montane species like this finch are declining in overall population. The Ross’s Goose is the smallest variety of the white geese that breed in North America.

This lake, with a surface area of up to 150 square miles in good years, is my go-to site for dozens of waterfowl and shorebird species, so I take its health personally. It is also a vital wintering and migratory site for most of these species, so I imagine they take its health very personally, as well.

We did however see a Yellow-rumped Warbler at Elephant Butte Lake, New Mexico on 16th November 1989 and a Townsend’s Warbler at Big Sur, California on 3rd December 1989. Many other non-migratory wood-warbler species are living their lives across the neotropics, doing their best to survive and pass on their genes.
