As of mid-November 2021, the Collaborative had submitted more than 4,200 checklists (up from 1,700 in 2018) and has observed 691 species in the United States (up from 618). Thus, there are now seven states with 200+ observed species. The state with the largest increase was Arizona , with 139 species added.

Although the Juniper Titmouse is not officially a threatened species, its numbers have been declining due to loss of habitat. Most REAL montane species like this finch are declining in overall population. Their range of breeding is literally only very southern Wyoming to very northern New Mexico. The Alpine Tundra seems to be shrinking and that will be the demise of this species along with a few others in the historic future to come.

It seems Common Mergansers are similarly lazy birds – according to a study quoted in the HBW, wintering individuals in New Mexico spent 58.6% Not the kind of behavior that makes a management consultant like me appreciate a species. This lake, with a surface area of up to 150 square miles in good years, is my go-to site for dozens of waterfowl and shorebird species, so I take its health personally. It is also a vital wintering and migratory site for most of these species, so I imagine they take its health very personally, as well.

The Sunshine State isn’t known for its massive snow drifts, nor for the massive flocks of Snow Geese that grace states like Texas and New Mexico every winter. Both bore the darker colorations of the Blue Morph gene, but it was impossible to mistake the species for anything other than a Snow Goose. I love Snow Geese.
