Most of our readers are not likely to be able to ID this bird, because it only occurs in Mexico and Guatemala. The Olive-sided Flycatcher breeds in Canada and the western United States, and winters mostly in northern South America. Fortunately, I had managed a collection of very bad photos before the bird flew off.

Lamb, who surveyed the birds of western Mexico from 1932-1955, and whose lists have been posted on eBird in recent years. 1st Hudsonian Godwits in central Mexico. They breed in northernmost Canada and Alaska, and winter in Patagonia in southernmost South America.

The one bird that I had wanted to highlight here, as it will indeed have moved back to the north and its breeding ground before I am able to get back here, is the Surfbird. Most of the Surfbirds were just starting to show the rusty gold scapulars of their breeding plumage. As you can see here, their name is well deserved.

Similar observation have been made in Cuba and the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico where up to 47,000 migrating Mississippi Kites are counted every season as they fly south.

The Colima Warbler has a distinction shared with no other species in the world: It is fully migratory, but both its summer reproductive range and its winter range are almost entirely within Mexico. (A A few breed in Texas’ Big Bend area.) All of our other migratory species either breed mostly in the U.S. So, lucky me!

We did however see a Yellow-rumped Warbler at Elephant Butte Lake, New Mexico on 16th November 1989 and a Townsend’s Warbler at Big Sur, California on 3rd December 1989. We spent almost 4 months crossing the USA and had an amazing time, although it was not the right time of year for Wood-Warblers.

So yes, this appears to be a breeding population.]. And since I don’t go to the lake very often in late spring, I rarely get to see these Avocets in their breeding plumage. Most Marbled Godwits breed in inland North America, and winter along the tropical coasts of Mexico and the Caribbean.
