Singapore’s Red Junglefowl

Red Junglefowl are under threat in Singapore due to habitat loss and inter-breeding, but we observed them most days on our hiking trips around the island and also on Pulau Ubin. It appears that the Red Junglefowl had been breeding this year around February, because we encountered many a family of them rustling around in the leaves in March.

May Migration in Queens

My spring has been pretty amazing so far with 146 species spotted since April 1 and Cerulean , Worm-eating , and Yellow-throated Warblers and a host of other species spotted before May even arrived, but the first couple of days in May have been even better. Queens, New York, May 2009 May is the month of migration in North America.

We also had Eastern Whipbirds hopping along the edge of the road tossing the leaf litter about in search of food. We encountered several species on different flowering plants including the Wanderer Butterfly. There are 70 species that are known to breed in the park. Satin Bowerbird -female. Satin Bowerbird bower.

Willie Creek

The first creek to the north is Willie Creek and we often visit it on the south side when we monitor the breeding pairs of Pied Oystercatchers. We have previously called these birds Beach Thick-knees , but as with so many species around the world in recent years they have had their names changed. There were some rather nice specimens.

Bunny Love

Predators that rely on lemmings, like the Snowy Owl , took advantage of the bounty and had great breeding success, raising large broods which, after the lemming population crashes, dispersed far and wide. And while I haven’t made it over their yet I hope to before they disperse into breeding territories.
