We stop by one especially unruly nest with half a dozen round nests of Spanish Sparrows below – two are chatting on a wire right now – while at the first floor, inside the nest construction, the House Sparrows live; and, at the top floor, the White Storks are clapping their bills. Brown Pelicans , and the northernmost Brown Booby breeding colony on this side of the Pacific. That larger clade is in turn sister to a clade containing the four remaining totipalmate bird families, which do still seem to be related, and which needed a new order name once pelicans were removed.

This first birding vignette is actually from just before the weekend, when I was at Alley Pond Park on a day that I was miraculously released from work a tiny bit early and was hoping to find a Yellow-throated Warbler but settled for a Swamp Sparrow by Little Alley Pond. At the same location a Chipping Sparrow also cooperated for pictures.

The little stiff-tails are almost year-round at Jamaica Bay though almost all leave to breed in the summer and in the depths of winter, when the ponds are almost completely frozen, they tend to head for open water. I had a beautifull view on 5 horned grebe here (one in breeding plumage), in Ann Arbor Michigan, for the 3 seconds it lasted, until I heard a huge “CRRACK&# , and I fell through the ice. On Sunday at Kissena Park I saw five species of sparrows.

Ospreys are so common here that when I noticed one on a branch eating a fish, I pointed it out to a chap nearby who remarked, “Hmmm, nice fish.&# Snowy Egrets were also showing off their breeding colours and Wood Storks were carrying small branches to add to precarious platforms that will soon have to serve as nests.
