All Is Not Lost, Part II

10,000 Birds

After investigating the area between the towns of Araró and Andocutín, I soldiered on to the equally-small town of Iramuco. Both species can theoretically breed in central Mexico, but in my experience are almost exclusively winter visitors. I had already seen a few Black-polled Yellowthroats along entirely new bodies of water.

Some Ingenuity Can Go a Long Way

10,000 Birds

Further support for inherent behavior comes from experiments. In another experiment, other species of Darwin Finches were kept next to Woodpecker Finches that used tools. In general, fish will swim to investigate anything that falls on the water hoping the object might be prey. The behavior was inherent. Photo: Peter Wilton.

Birding Sepilok, Borneo (Part 2)

10,000 Birds

In the non-breeding season, male Baya Weavers sometimes enter the basket-making trade, often with considerable success. 10,000 Birds

A lovely looking and distinctive sounding bird (so they say, I sadly have not seen one…yet), the Kirtland’s Warbler can only be found during its breeding season in Jack Pine forests 5 to 20 years old in the northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan. At several points in recent history, Kirtland’s Warbler appeared to be on the verge of extinction.

Seabirds at Bass Rock

10,000 Birds

When I finally got around to investigating Bass Rock the week before our trip, I realized why it was at the top of the lists. Birders flock to this haven, as it is a sanctuary for over 150,000 breeding Northern Gannets , making it the world’s largest colony. On a single day, more than 5,000 dead birds were counted.
