Calls include nasal wheezes, squeals, cackling and churring; combinations of rather high nasal “u-err”, quick high nasal “ii” and rolling “pwaaowa” calls uttered by groups of two or more individuals. If I had just this information to go by, I would assume the “Great Parrotbills” to be the name of a Doo-Wop-Band.

You truly cannot experience the Gray-barred Wren without hearing the raucous calls shared among group members of this highly-social species. Slate-throated Redstart : This lovely little bird is our most common resident (breeding) warbler, and in certain places you will hear it EVERYWHERE. That emotional connection earned it my #2 spot.

Emotional bandage,” which conveys some of his lessons. Any animal group in the world can use these materials as fundraising tools.

It's one that's brought on, no doubt, by the acts of vandalism and intimidation of radical animal-rights groups, but I think it also serves to insulate the research community from any responsibility it might otherwise have to increase transparency and public engagement with the work. But that's now what happened.

… – part 2 – Once I finish this writing, with a strange mix of emotions I will put the Lynx field guide Birds of Colombia to the bookshelf for the first time, more than half a year after I received it. Actually, I was bested by an entire group of teenagers, all gathered – along with 36 adults – on Hog Island , Audubon’s famous camp off the coast of Maine. Each year Hog Island offers programs, taught by a stellar staff of naturalists and artists, to groups of all kinds (teenagers, adults, families).

The proprietor of our ecolodge guides my small group of birders up a steep slope where we see, just at the point where a scope view deteriorates into pixels, a huge bird—a Chaco Eagle, also known as a Crowned Eagle—on a huge nest. September 2017, Cerrado, Brazil. We are cautioned to keep the location of the eagle a secret.
