They are fiercely territorial on breeding territory, but in migration they often gather in rather large numbers. Eastern Kingbirds breed across the eastern United States and much of southern Canada. They migrate through Central America and winter in South America, apparently almost entirely east of the Andes.

They have expanded their range through Indonesia and into Australia and is found in post breeding dispersal as far north as South Korea and Japan. The following decades continued the great expansion, and it was recorded breeding in Canada in 1962 and Chile by 1970. There are two main subspecies, the nominate B.

The question is why these natives of rural areas in southern South America (east of the Andes) have been so spectacularly successful in establishing their colonies. This echoes their behavior in their native South America, where they are known as agricultural pests who will eat and destroy crops. Again, not very fussy!

Some of these birds, breeding up here at 73 degrees north will winter at the tip of South America, Tierra Del Fuego, 54 degrees south or so. Over 3 days of counts in one location my counts went from over 150 to 2. But they have to leave early. These small birds are long distant migrants, following the Sun.

So yes, this appears to be a breeding population.]. And since I don’t go to the lake very often in late spring, I rarely get to see these Avocets in their breeding plumage. Most Marbled Godwits breed in inland North America, and winter along the tropical coasts of Mexico and the Caribbean.

I am so recently arrived that I still have my Canadian (breeding) plumage. Many of our larger shorebirds connect me to breeding grounds farther south. Many of the birds from Canada and the eastern United States travel over the Caribbean, or around the Gulf of Mexico, to winter in Central and South America.
