Birding Shanghai in June 2023

This leaves Shanghai in June with basically just the year-round species and the summer breeders, maybe with a few added ultra-lazy individuals of migratory species. Here’s a video. Also as video. That includes breeding birds, as indicated by the presence of some rather cute chicks ( video ).

Birding Hongbenghe, Yunnan (Part 1)

This laughingthrush is a cooperative breeder – nestlings are fed by all members of a group, often 6-12 (not just 2 as in Wham!) The White-crested Laughingthrush looks like it could easily play a cameo role in a Wham! Note to those readers who do not know Wham!:

In the mid-1970s, a local breeder was burglarized and a few of his birds escaped, after which the breeder released his remaining stock of about 50 birds 1. Like most dove species, Eurasian Collared-Doves are prolific breeders. Since its introduction, this dove has spread quickly across the North American continent.

Acorn Woodpeckers: The Clowns of the Avian World

You can get a brief look into their comical behavior from this video showing two females at my woodpecker feeder. You can hear their calls throughout the video but at the 53 second mark, the second female comes in and gives the typical call with the head bob. Click on photos for full sized images.

Anna’s, Rufous and Calliope: Hummingbirds of the West

She is the latest of our local breeders, not nesting usually until mid-May. The female is the earliest breeder of all these species, arriving on breeding grounds shortly after the males in November. If you haven’t seen a hover of hummingbirds around a feeder before, you may want to watch this video I filmed off my back porch.

Yellow-throated Warbler at Connetquot River State Park

I even took some video though the wind moving the branches around made it tough to get good footage. At least you get to hear the song of a Yellow-throated Warbler in the video. What’s not to like about a gorgeous wood-warbler singing its heart out on a sunny day? I did my best but it’s not great. And it was still singing!

In Search of New York’s Breeding Birds

As always, the woods around the marsh were busy with breeders setting up shop. I particularly appreciated the Veery I heard singing, a bird you’ll hear in the video. This video is obviously being shared here just for the sound. Not very exciting to look at, is it?
