Greater Flamingos are considered cooperative breeders as fledglings are raised in a creche, in which large numbers of young are watched by multiple non-breeding adult greater flamingos. Probably one of the most interesting things about these little birds is that they are cooperative breeders. I shot this short video where one male is immediately followed by another individual male once the first one exits. If you have good ears you can hear them as they call to each other.

This is similar to the fact that all birds, even first time breeders within a species build identical nests. As shown in the video, bait-fishing is more efficient than regular sit-and-wait fishing. They only need to master the technique by practicing; they are born knowing what to do.

Though the Dickcissel is the star of this video I like that you can hear the “t-d-lisk” of the Henslow’s Sparrow (to say nothing of a Bobolink ). They are going to stop mowing the path that leads to the blind to give these potential rare-for-New York breeders an uninterrupted shot at reproducing.

Interestingly, according to BirdLife International , which lists the Glaucous Gull as a Species of Least Concern because of its large range and population, the populations found in the western Palearctic tend to remain near nesting grounds year-round so it is essentially only the North American breeders that wander during the winter months.

In New York State , however, the Short-eared Owl is considered an endangered species and it has likely been extirpated as a breeder in several of its former strongholds. In the case of Acorn Woodpeckers, they are cooperative breeders (as with many other polygynandrous species), which seems to predispose species to polygynandry. Alpine Accentors, on the other hand, are not cooperative breeders and females typically have very little to do with each other. Wicked, right?

You can also see the owl not moving much in a short video. Apparently , the two main factors influencing double brooding are the individual quality of the breeder and the timing of the first clutch. On the positive side, two friends of mine independently commented on the video of a woodcock (taken at Nanhui) “A dancing bird!”
