At the risk of yet again reinforcing our predictable North American slant at Booze and Birds, it has to be noted that this year’s United States presidential campaign season has certainly been an occasion for drinking, especially as we enter the final two weeks before the election.

Or would be, had I encountered more of them – so far, I have seen only a very small share of the approximately 233 woodpecker species, and got decent photos of an even smaller number – not much more than 10% of all of them. So, writing a post about them is easy.

Pough “with illustrations in color of every species” by Don Eckelberry, Doubleday, 1946. The New York Times obituary cited the series (and Steiner’s other books, but it was the series that made money) as reshaping the publishing industry in the United States.**. The grand total is 817 species!

By the time this post publishes, I’ll be on an airplane heading back to the United States following a truly remarkable two week visit to Uganda as part of a group of western birders visiting there to promote the inaugural African Birding Expo. In the relatively brief period, my group had something on the order of 450 species.

And, because his name was so firmly a part of birding culture, I also didn’t realize how recently he had lived and birded the United States, nor how relatively new was the concept of a field guide. Adding the 76 new species in the Hawaii section, this makes coverage of approximately 884 species. Species Accounts.

I didn’t realize how many new species I would see within the city itself! The first looked very similar to a Mourning Dove , which of course can be found across the United States. Again, they are fairly common in the Southwest and Mexico, but for me they felt brand new! Austin had one more life bird in store for me.
