I did often wonder while reading the book whether the result equaled the effort. The late Victorian age was not a good time to be an egret!

We can, of course, count wild, native, species. We can count vagrant species that made it to the area we are in under their own power. We can count introduced species that have met the criteria of the “Bird Police” for the area to which they are introduced. There are lots of birds we can’t count.

This book has so many great quotes that I'm going to have to write a couple of posts about them. Whenever the media report that someone has killed "an endangered animal" or "an endangered species," they too confuse an individual with a species. Hunters kill members of endangered species.

It has entertaining stories, includes animals people care about because they like them (and also addresses that concept), and it describes how the numbers of various species decreased to the point of being classified as "endangered" or worse. Those are the final words of the book. Now we just need to step in a different direction.

It’s a unique bird, even its scientific name is wonderful, so it’s not surprising that Gerard Gorman, Woodpecker Expert Supreme, has written a book all about the species. This is a very easy book to read. But they are woodpeckers: the genus Jynx of the subfamily Jynginae of the Picidae family.
