Hunting sandhill cranes in Kentucky is a bad idea from a public relations standpoint, considering the growing cadre of birders and nature enthusiasts for whom cranes are a touchstone species.

The opening beautifully encapsulates the essence of the book. She doesn’t know the species till it emerges, almost dreamlike, from the heavy glare of the sun. Fox encounters 69 species, some singly, some in huge feeding or migrating flocks. We are all suckers for an albatross, at least in the United States.

What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death.

I had never heard of a seedcracker until two minutes ago when I went looking through a newish book to find a type of bird I hadn’t heard of before, and that took me less than two minutes. (It’s There were two species there, even, of a type I had never heard of. It’s a type of estrelidid finch. What a treat!

We also knew we had discovered Africa’s next hot birding destination.
