Although it was nothing like going from New York to California or even Buffalo, New York to North Carolina, a change of location, however slight, can bring new birds especially in Costa Rica. In typical blackbird fashion, this common garden bird gave occasional, loud, ringing calls. These were. Great Kiskadee. Social Flycatcher.

On the same day that I journeyed out to eastern Long Island to enjoy birding Shinnecock Inlet in the fog I also explored the fields of Riverhead, where large flocks of geese congregate and where a Yellow-headed Blackbird had been reported recently amid a large flock of icterids at a Buffalo farm.

The lush pastures of the Aripo Livestock Station sustained herds of happy Buffalypso , a special breed of T&T beef cattle named for their Water Buffalo heritage and Calypso-happy country. Last but not least were not one but TWO new species of blackbird for me, both Yellow-hooded and Red-breasted ! In fact, it was.

This week I will introduce you to the section from Fish Creek to Buffalo. My journey this week was a return trip from Fish Creek to Buffalo. I continued on to the old Buffalo railway station and there are toilet and picnic facilities available and a playground for children.

The beech forests were dense, landscapes stunning, only that wind… Birds were hiding from it, too, with mostly t**s ( Coal , Long-tailed and Great ), a few thrushes ( Mistle , Song and Eurasian Blackbird ) and numerous Common Chaffinches showing. A cold, productive day spent birding with a friend from Buffalo was marked by two owls, lots of ducks, Tundra Swans , several gulls, and other targets not possible in tropical Costa Rica. Melodious Blackbird – Dives dives; Santa Barbara, 9-Jan. The locals don’t always get along with the migrants.

Back to Riverhead we went, where we failed to find anything other than the Greater White-fronted Goose Derek had found earlier, though we did spend quite a bit of time at the buffalo farm at the corner of Reeves and Roanoke hoping to pick a good blackbird out of the huge flock there.
