Birding Shanghai in March 2023

In my experience, people eat more food they are familiar with than food that is unfamiliar. Chinese Blackbird s are among the most common birds in the Shanghai compound where I live (and where fortunately this year I am not actually locked in, a contrast to the situation one year ago).

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of April 2020)

Alas, these gentle rains may not always speed spring migrants on their way to breeding grounds far from the equator. We got out to Lucien Morin during a break in the rain and saw nothing more seasonal than Red-winged Blackbirds claiming their individual patches of marshland. Any luck this weekend?

A Gentlemen’s Big Day’s Birding

Wren, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Robin, Garden Warbler, Blackcap, Goldcrest, Treecreeper, Chiffchaff were all noted by 4.30, and we soon managed to add two more tricky species: Stonechat and Willow Warbler. This fen has breeding Marsh Harriers, and we saw at least three different birds, while Cuckoos called close by.

Especially as we were at the time about to experience a rapidly advancing tropical storm. Striated Heron in breeding plumage – extra plumes and blue lores. Red-breasted Meadowlarks controlled the drier sections while Yellow-hooded Blackbirds occupied the more flooded areas.

Audubon Associate Naturalist, have led this tour many times, through tornados, droughts, questionable restaurants, and, sadly, the advent of fracking, and every one of my friends who has participated over the years has raved about the experience and the birds (in fact, one member of our group was on his third or fourth trip, I lost count).

I counted them very roughly, but I do have a lot of experience estimating flocks. They do not build nests, but occupy old nests of Rooks and breed colonially among them. Red-footed Falcon’s breeding range starts less than 50 mi north of here and I hope that some will choose to join a local rookery and stay.”.
