Birding Sukau, Sabah, Borneo

Sukau birding essentially means staying in a more-or-less comfortable lodge on the banks of the Kinatabagan river, and taking boat tours on more-or-less rickety boats on the river. So, just photos of the birds themselves. Why that makes Mr. Graydon worthy of having a bird species named after him is a mystery to me.

The tremendous Rhinoceros Hornbill

Most readers of this blog will certainly appreciate an out-of-season tropical post at the beginning of January, a post based on what was almost my best bird of the year 2012 – if it wasn’t for the Bearded Vulture I saw a bit later. Africa’s Big Five and Little Five

They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!). In Asia they are even commonly kept as pets!
