Although work distracts him regularly from the observation of birds, he has managed to see a great many species regardless. Peter likes to meet people and have good after-birding lunches which has seriously hampered his ability to build up a truly impressive life list. Somehow, he doesn’t care.

I contemplated how the birds were able to achieve such acceleration after sleeping all night without an ounce of caffeine. Once the swifts ascended well above the canopy, they began to look like birds again. Meanwhile, the forest edge was awash with birds. The birds were for the most part playing hard to get, though.

The bird is so rare and elusive that it was thought to be extinct. Twenty-five Puerto Rican Parrots are being groomed to be pioneers: The Critcally Endangered birds have been transported from existing colonies to the Maricao State Forest.

We didn’t know what to expect from the train that had at one time been used to transport bananas to the coast and is now used to transport ecotourists to the wildlife refuge. It was expertly driven and we saw some cool birds en route, for the best of which the driver was kind enough to stop. Howler monkeys!

Below are a few suggestions of sites within the city that can easily be reached using public transport. Most of these are very common birds which are widely distributed throughout Brazil. There is no transport inside the park and all travel must be on foot. Look out for the Howler Monkeys too.

Part of the world they wanted to transport was natural. There were no mammals, little game, and not many birds either. The reasons for this perceived lack of birds are threefold. California Quail are familiar birds to West Coast birders of North America, and Kiwis too now. Rabbits are still an agricultural pest.

We have just returned from an incredible three weeks in Singapore, where unlike many others who visit the country we spent the whole time in nature parks, forests and gardens observing birds. The only shopping we did was to buy fresh fruit and some Asian snacks for while we were out all day hiking and birding.
