Gulf Oil a Looming Threat to Marine Life

So far, we're not seeing the large-scale impact of this oil spill on marine life. It may not be immediate, like oil-coated birds, but slower and more subtle, like the effect on oxygen levels in the sea. Scientists fear the oil will make it difficult for marine animals to obtain the oxygen they need to survive.

Bean Hollow

What makes Bean Hollow stand out is that along with a rather pebbly beach, it also has some wonderful tide pools full of very accessible marine life. As for birds, well, I wasn’t paying much attention back then. And finally, I also managed to locate the black birds with white wing patches he kept pointing out.

Red-breasted Merganser with a Mouthful

On a visit yesterday after work to Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn I happened across this female Red-breasted Merganser that I initially thought was in the midst of struggling to swallow a nasty chunk of some kind of marine life. In fact, the snack appeared to have gotten somehow stuck to or tangled around the bird’s bill.
