As introductions to tropical Pacific birding go, you could do a lot worse than Fiji. Throw in some good beaches and great diving and you have a popular place to visit for a lot of tourists, and also birders wanting to start their Pacific birding lists. as the island had two features I really wanted, great reefs and great birding.

It is also a great place for the birder for the fish have brought the birds and the island has supplied places to nest. No-one visiting the island can ignore the birds. Every daylight hour, every where you look there is a bird flying through your view. Other birds? They are everywhere. Brown or Common Noddy.

I have raved on and on about how Kaikoura is the best place in the world to see albatrosses , but the once sleepy seaside town is not actually famous for these magnificent birds. What put this once small fishing town on the map was not birds but mammals, specifically whales and dolphins. And people do go to see them.
