What makes Bean Hollow stand out is that along with a rather pebbly beach, it also has some wonderful tide pools full of very accessible marine life. As for birds, well, I wasn’t paying much attention back then. All Brandt’s The same goes for the three species of loons flying by. Why, Bean Hollow, of course.

Surrounded by coral reefs filled with fish, sea turtles of three species plus the common visits of Manta Rays: it is a pretty exciting place for anyone who likes to skin dive. It is also a great place for the birder for the fish have brought the birds and the island has supplied places to nest. They are everywhere.

So what does climate change mean for birds? Though all birds will be somehow impacted by climate change, I think it is important to note that not all will suffer. As deserts expand, birds suited to arid climates may be just fine. That said, there are many species we should be extremely concerned about.

The Dry Tortugas National Park , seven bits of lands comprised of coral and sand, is home to seven nesting avian species, 40 winter visitors, and 250+ fly-through bird species during spring and fall migrations. This particular bird (whom I had never even heard of before the trip) only comes to land a few times per year.

These nutrient-rich currents provide sustenance for a variety of marine-life, including the many thousand of seabirds that call this place home. The boat-trip over to the island is far from uneventful and the pelagic birding is very rewarding. Also present are six species of reptiles, including the numerous Brown Iguanas. .

As introductions to tropical Pacific birding go, you could do a lot worse than Fiji. Throw in some good beaches and great diving and you have a popular place to visit for a lot of tourists, and also birders wanting to start their Pacific birding lists. as the island had two features I really wanted, great reefs and great birding.
