The Dry Tortugas National Park , seven bits of lands comprised of coral and sand, is home to seven nesting avian species, 40 winter visitors, and 250+ fly-through bird species during spring and fall migrations. This particular bird (whom I had never even heard of before the trip) only comes to land a few times per year. Masked Booby.

Its amazing to me that there are still places on earth where wildlife is blissfully unafraid of humans. It comes as no surprise that this was one of Jacques Cousteau’s favorite places and he filmed the area and its wildlife extensively for his tv series. The island is half a mile wide and about three-quarters of a mile in length.

Sperm Whales in Kaikoura

I have raved on and on about how Kaikoura is the best place in the world to see albatrosses , but the once sleepy seaside town is not actually famous for these magnificent birds. What put this once small fishing town on the map was not birds but mammals, specifically whales and dolphins. And people do go to see them.
