I got back into birding less than a decade ago, long after moving to Mexico in 1983. So I can hardly speak with authority on birding in the U.S. All sorts of exotic and beautiful species may be seen. Southeastern Arizona is unusual, precisely because its species mix is as much Mexican as it is American.

These lands support countless birds, either year-round, as migratory stopovers, or as breeding grounds. But what else should birders know?

One of those ornithologists is Jonathan Vargas, with whom I went birding on the first Monday of this month of May. Jonathan is originally from San Blas on Mexico’s west coast, a birder’s paradise I have yet to visit. Jonathan also works as a birding guide up in Baja California, if anyone is interested.).

The down side is that I also don’t get to enjoy the kinds of birds that would be found in a typical backyard. Over the last weekend, my wife and I made a whirl-wind trip from Mexico, up to the Pacific Northwest, the Seattle area, where we stayed with the in-laws.

I moved to Mexico in 1983 (and really should update my bio below). Unfortunately, my daughter, son-in-law, and daughter-in-law all work for Mexican entities that do not give them the day off, so the celebration was moved to Saturday. Oh yes, and as he specifically requested, a morning of birding with his dear old dad.

More than 5,000 bird species in the world make some kind of seasonal movement. On our North American continent, tens of millions of birds are flying northward on peak spring nights. He gives lots of marvelous examples, such as the Blackpoll warbler, “among the most astonishing and extreme of all migratory birds.”.

But, sometimes an appreciation of birds and birding requires more than a reference book with images of birds and facts about their identifying field marks. There are large avian handbooks and small ‘how-to bird’ guides, and quite a few excellent books of both types have been published.
