On average, over 100 rhinos were illegally killed each month. Molewa added that so far this year 49 rhino had been killed countrywide. In Africa, one elephant is being killed every 15 minutes. But the “illegal international trade” is already there, killing – among other places – in Kruger (S. Steven had no binoculars, but impressively sharp eyes and great knowledge of birds. Another ellie is being killed as you read this line. Perhaps 15 minutes?

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. This bird is represented in an ancient Egyptian hieroglyph. Can’t say that it is a particularly obvious name from seeing the bird.

H5N2 is a bird influenza virus that is making news. This mainly affects domestic fowl, and in this sense is not a topic central to 10,000 Birds. But, wild birds are part of the story, and the virus itself has changed and has been known to make wild birds ill. Ostriches are infected as well as, in one known case, Falcons.
