The Little Egret walks in front of her, a dozen Lesser Whistling Ducks flies noisily low above water and through a flooded grass wades one Black-winged Stilt. The Osprey tries another hunt, finally a successful one, while Telia goes deeper into the water and lies down. The Sun is getting lower, painting both grass and the tigress gold.

Out of just under 200 bird species I observed this year in SE Europe, there are 6 threatened species. Some of them were always uncommon in the region, others are highly localised, some are hard to notice among thousands of similar birds, but others were abundant recently and one of them still is, despite the decrease in numbers.

The haunting call of the West Indian Whistling Duck has long been a sound synonymous with the ever-shrinking wetlands of the Caribbean. But, as with so many other species, these birds have been left to do their own whistle blowing. West Indian Whistling Ducks are the largest of the eight different whistling duck species.

This being a life bird for me I had no choice but to take the drive. The good news is that these majestic birds have been increasing in numbers every year! This video was taken at the Chico Oxidation Ponds where these swans were relaxing with hundreds, if not thousands of ducks. Click on photos for full sized images.
