On my 21-day Kenyan safaris we reckoned to find around 600 species of birds and around 60 mammals, both impressive totals. In 2023 I attempted to keep a year list of mammal encounters: the list barely exceeded 20 species, while it became complicated by seeing bats and voles that I was unable to name specifically. in the evening.

They didn’t, of course, have the luxury of the fantastic modern optics we take for granted today. Another Captain, John Speke (Speke’s Weaver), was killed by his own shotgun when climbing a stile while out shooting in England, a sad end for the man who was the first European to see Lake Victoria (which he named after Queen Victoria).

The species name is long enough to be the middle line of a formal English haiku. One of the most important pieces of good wildlife rehabilitation, of course, is knowing the natural history of your patient. I think most rehabilitators can attest to the strangeness of getting to know a species first in your hand, and later in the wild.

A Barred Cuckoo-Dove showed somewhat atypical behavior or had not read its eBird entry about it being “seldom seen out in the open … quick to flee when approached” Of course, Hongbenghe, Yunnan is quite far away from Chicago. The Crested Serpent Eagle is another species bound to suffer from a naming error in perpetuity.

This non-technical book is a development from a series of lectures, tried and tested in numerous adult education courses given to non-specialists. At some stage, a salmon-hunting bear at a shingle beach came too close, mere 9 steps. Those bears live in the wild and are not used to humans. Cactus finch, Geospiza species.

A huge surprise was the addition of an entirely new species for Peru, a Black Swift , found by the Forest Falcons team. An Andean Flicker on the ground in the Peruvian Andes.
