Good for animals, of course – particularly some shy mammals. According to the HBW, based on strong morphological, ecological, and genetic differences, this is likely to be a distinct species altogether. I always feel a bit sad for bird species that probably cannot even pronounce their own names.

While these birds are very much liked by Chinese birders, the species could unfortunately not be named the National Bird of China as the Latin species name of the bird is Grus Japonicus. Perhaps the fact that we really enjoy talking to each other had a slight negative impact on the number of species seen (“only” 52). Still, a male Archilochus hummer (of either species) is a rare treat here. And, of course, there were also Rufous , Berylline , White-eared , and Broad-tailed Hummingbirds to be seen.

eBird seems to be critical of this species’ work ethics, stating that “it flies lazily over open fields or marshes” Maybe the owl is just sleepy, not lazy. The species is listed as Vulnerable, with severe degradation of the wintering lake habitats in China cited as an important factor.

A Barred Cuckoo-Dove showed somewhat atypical behavior or had not read its eBird entry about it being “seldom seen out in the open … quick to flee when approached” Of course, Hongbenghe, Yunnan is quite far away from Chicago. The Crested Serpent Eagle is another species bound to suffer from a naming error in perpetuity.

Walking along the beach and drifting sporadically into the dry forest, the first birds we heard were White-fringed Antwrens and Black-faced Grassquits – both are species not found on Trinidad but relatively common on Tobago. Chacachacare also has Rufous Nightjar recorded, but we didn’t manage to snag that species.
