When was the last time you travelled for birding? It offers the richest pickings in Belgrade, especially with the incoming spring, but I must admit, the thing I miss the most is travelling and birding overseas. Back to the phone, it is important for navigation, too, as well as for a bird ID app, especially calls and songs.

Sukau birding essentially means staying in a more-or-less comfortable lodge on the banks of the Kinatabagan river, and taking boat tours on more-or-less rickety boats on the river. So, just photos of the birds themselves. Why that makes Mr. Graydon worthy of having a bird species named after him is a mystery to me.

I had set aside the morning of Sunday, June 10th to cross the San Francisco Peninsula to the Pacific Ocean town of Half Moon Bay, a mere 25 minute drive away, for a few hours of birding. Not only was I very, very wet, so were the birds that I saw. I’m fond of photos of birds in a visible mist or drizzle. I was wrong.

Okay, this was a shorter distance observation, but even in such situations I love to see birds through the scope. I have an excellent scope – the very best piece of my birding equipment (oh, this year I should finally get a mobile phone adapter for it), and a rather inferior camera. Why should I sketch it, I am lousy at that.

I also watched, but failed to get pictures of, the same young bird being fed by two different male House Sparrows. These particular birds were in Battery Park at the southern tip of Manhattan, but the same story is taking place all over the world right now, as few species have successfully adapted to as many locations as the House Sparrow.

These birds are normally a constant presence on the lake, but because of the drought, it had been a year since I had seen the Grebes there, and a 18 months for the Ruddy Ducks. (I I took so many photos on this outing that my battery ran out of charge before I finally saw the Grebes , so no photos of those.). (In Semipalmated Plover.

Zelda, the Wild Turkey who makes Battery Park, at the southern tip of Manhattan, her home, managed to survive the flooding and devastation that Manhattan suffered due to Hurricane Sandy.
