We only saw the first two, and in our effort to scour each broken limb for a perched raptor, we stumbled upon a Bat Falcon of all creatures. Bat Falcon in the now blazing sun. I’ll spare you the pictures of the dead sea turtle and instead share something a little brighter.

Giant anteaters, giant otters, giant armadillos, giant river turtles, giant termites and giant waterlilies that can sustain the weight of a human baby! Ok, maybe not the vampire bat…but some of the more “cuddly” species are actually quite easy to see. Not only is Guyana famous for its birdlife, but it’s also the Land of Giants.

What did find right off the bat, was an amazing group of people, all willing to help out in so many ways. It is the location that I found it in that make this photo so special, well, maybe not for the turtle. Our first three days were spent bouncing around from area to area, looking to find the species on my wish list.

It’s almost a bucolic place; sea turtles nest on the beaches, Humpback Whales and bat rays frolic just offshore, and you can buy the freshest fish from the panga fisherman at Punta Lobos every afternoon. Judging by the number of people I know who have been there at one time or another, you might find yourself there some day.

An additional, five-page chapter touches on Other Sea Life–Fish, Sea Turtles, Jellyfish and Krill, Kelp, and Landbirds (the possibility of an exhausted migrating bird landing on the boat.). That’s 22 Marine Mammal species and 43 Seabirds. The idea is that the observer can drill down to the correct identification.
