Over recent weeks I have been able to share some of my observations along the Great Southern Rail Trail in Victoria, Australia. They are very similar to the Masked Lapwings in the north of Australia, but of course they have ‘black shoulders”! This week I will introduce you to the section from Fish Creek to Buffalo.

Western Australia is a big state in case you were not sure! Then in the morning they would bucket the water onto the granite with the use of horses and the granite would explode in layers. Burra Rock Conservation Reserve offers free camping , but you do need to be self-sufficient and there is no mobile phone coverage.

Foxes were introduced to Australia in 1855 for hunting and have established themselves far and wide. This is an excellent trail that offers numerous bird species and there are rarely many people walking, cycling or riding horses along it. There is a family of feral foxes that I often encounter near Bennison Creek.

Sometimes they were with horses, but that’s OK! That is 11 more than the total for 2012 and we are only in March, so we have done pretty well and there are more birds right here in Australia to see even without thinking about an overseas trip! Now that is just how it should be! Cattle Egret and cattle.

Take the fossil horse Hipparion , found in France and Florida. How far could those horses swim? Before plate tectonics was accepted as the explanation for, well, pretty much everything in the field, geologists had struggled with the problematic distribution of fossils and living organisms.

The weather has not been very warm at all in this part of Australia despite it being summer and we have been fortunate to have not been affected by the awful bush-fires. There’s plenty to observe along the Great Southern Rail Trail whether you choose to walk it, cycle it or horse-ride along it!
