Purple-crowned Fairy-wrens at Geikie Gorge

The species is only in the north of Australia and they are often found in locations that are hard to get to year round. We have been able to observe Purple-crowned Fairy-wrens in a few locations across the north of Australia and they were quite easy to see in the car-park at Big Horse Creek in 2017.

I always approach the bridge slowly to see what bird species are below and around the area. Foxes were introduced to Australia in 1855 for hunting and have established themselves far and wide. Once I find a few active species I watch and wait. Pacific Black Ducks. Tiger Snake. White-throated Treecreeper.

Burra Rock Conservation Reserve

Western Australia is a big state in case you were not sure! Then in the morning they would bucket the water onto the granite with the use of horses and the granite would explode in layers. Burra Rock Conservation Reserve offers free camping , but you do need to be self-sufficient and there is no mobile phone coverage.

Sometimes they were with horses, but that’s OK! In fact the lake was too deep for a lot of bird species, but the track in the bush was very productive and our 200th bird after two weeks was the Red-capped Robin! Of the 271 bird species I had 163 new ones to add to my year list and a total of 311 now!
