Arriving in Singapore we soon collected our bags and got ourselves a NETS card for travel on public transport and to also use in supermarkets. The train system is fast and efficient and was our primary mode of transport. We had already observed 164 bird species in Singapore and the next new bird was one that we had heard, but not seen.

Marlborough Sounds has a pretty special endemic, the King Shag , a species that isn’t just endemic to New Zealand but endemic to just the Sounds. The reason Alan had come was to film another endemic, a critically endangered species, the Orange-fronted Parakeet. Anyway, this is my article so it’s the Orange-fronted Parakeet.

Questionable Practices at the Calgary Zoo

Look at all these incidents that have occurred there (listed in the Montreal Gazette article in the above link).I Incidents include a hippo who died in transport from Denver and a Turkmenian markhor, a species of wild goat, hung itself at the zoo after becoming trapped by a rope.

In addition to the effects of these invasive species on ecosystems, there are also compelling humane and public safety arguments for restricting trade. The trade is dangerous for people, but also for the snakes.

Hornbills of Sabah

In total, there are eight species of hornbills in Borneo – the best place to see them seems to be the Kinabatagan River area (also known as Sukau). Another paper reviews information on Oriental Pied Hornbills raiding the nests of various bird species in Singapore and even pet bird cages.
