An article in today's Seattle Times about Woodland Park Zoo's attempts over the last 20 years to breed elephants. The zoo claims it's to preserve the species. Very controversial with organizations such as In Defense of Animals, PETA and the Northwest Animal Rights Network. They say it's cruel.

Another animal dies at the Calgary Zoo and more questions are being raised about their practices. Look at all these incidents that have occurred there (listed in the Montreal Gazette article in the above link).I I don't track zoos, but this seems like an unusually high number of casualties.

The zoo, surely, carries responsibility for deficiencies in its enclosure. In light of this horrible incident, is it right for the zoo to carry on a breeding program that subjects more animals to such unnatural lives? In my opinion, neither Harambe nor the child should ever have been at the zoo.
