Woodland Park Zoo and its Controversial Elephant Breeding Efforts

An article in today's Seattle Times about Woodland Park Zoo's attempts over the last 20 years to breed elephants. The zoo claims it's to preserve the species. Very controversial with organizations such as In Defense of Animals, PETA and the Northwest Animal Rights Network. They say it's cruel.

Lanthier doesn't hide his contempt for animal rights groups who lash out, without considering the role zoos play in conservation.

The Blue-crowned Laughingthrush (Wuyuan) is listed as Critically Endangered, as there are only about 250-280 birds spending the breeding season in Northeastern Jiangxi (and according to the HBW, it is not clear where they spend the non-breeding period). There probably is a Billy Bragg song about them.

After watching Tiger King and having my eyes opened to the world of shady exotic animal "rescue" zoos/sanctuaries (i.e. Somebody told me about Barn Hill Preserve of Delaware where you can pay to "swim with otters" and pet a kangaroo.

Spoon-billed Sandpipers Arrive in England

Thirteen Spoon-billed Sandpipers have arrived in England after spending sixty days in quarantine at Moscow Zoo. The birds were captured on their breeding grounds in Siberia and the hope is that they can be used to start a captive breeding program in an attempt to bring the species back from the brink.
