It seems likely that this individual bird was an escape from a local zoo, as has already been theorized on the New York State listserv. Imagine the long, lonely flight of a White Stork over the entirety of the Atlantic Ocean, blown off course as it tried to find its way back to its breeding grounds.

The new cub was born at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens to a mother who wasn’t able to care for him. When zoo keepers saw that the baby was not eating and having trouble gaining weight, they made the decision to hand-raise him. It was on the SSP and Jacksonville Zoo’s advice that the new baby was brought to Busch Gardens.

Wikipedia also has some highly specific information on the appearance of the eggs of this bird over time, something that I would not necessarily have needed to know: “They become increasingly stained with feces, as does the nest, over the duration of the breeding season.”

Greater Rheas, a species the Germans call Nandu, are very popular in Germany and frequently kept in zoos as well as private enclosures. On the contrary, the birds were quite satisfied with their new-found freedom and realms, and started breeding immediately after their escape in the spring of 2001, much to everyone’s surprise.

The pond herons are worth a mention, as they cause amusing irritation for some visiting birders. There are two kinds around Bangkok, the Javan Pond Heron and the Chinese Pond Heron.
