I have to agree with her, as every time I chance upon an owl, be it something as common as a Great Horned Owl, or something extremely special like Australia’s Powerful Owl , or the Verreaux’s Eagle-owl from South Africa, I get a huge feeling of accomplishment. With birds like Ornate Hawk-Eagle and Snowcap possible, how can you not take up birding while living in Costa Rica? It was something that truly caught me by surprise, a bird usually heard or seen in Mexico or certain, out of the way gulches in Arizona. However, the latest addition wasn’t any of these.

One of the great things about living in southern Arizona is our proximity to Mexico. Golden Eagles soared over head, Ladder-back Woodpeckers, Costa’s Hummingbirds, Broad-billed Hummingbirds ( as seen at the top of this story) , Cactus Wrens could be seen almost anywhere in the canyon as well.

“Do you see the eagle?” Ogren Park Allegiance Field is the home of the Missoula Osprey*, a farm team for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Time enough, I suppose, for our newcomers to figure out that those aren’t eagles. “Look,” one said to the other. Missoula knows Ospreys and embraces them.
