The point is, the field guide I grabbed without hesitation was the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America, 7th Edition by Jon L. North America is defined as from north of the Mexican border to the far north, plus “adjacent islands and seas within 200 nautical miles off the coast or offshore islands.”

Members of the family Caprimulgidae don’t rank very high on any list of visually charismatic birds, so I was surprised to finally find one depicted on this week’s wine, the Bota Box Nighthawk Black Red Wine Blend. I can’t think of many easier or more pleasant ways to bird. And that’s what’s been happening for the last several years.

This may be before the Fairy-Wrens developed the ability to detect Cuckoo young in the nest, an ability recently described by ornithologists, or this family may be one of the 60% who don’t detect Cuckoo chicks. And, to be fair, with the small number of species located in Great Britain and Ireland, there is far less confusion than in North America. There are many more British species that resemble ours, but belong to different subfamilies or even families. The authors of this field guide are both nationally-known odonate experts.
