The April arrival of the Peterson Field Guide to Birds of North America, Second Edition was a supremely happy moment in a very difficult, sad month. A companion regional guide, Peterson Field Guide to Birds of Western North America was published in 1941; its fifth edition will be coming out in early September.

That fallacious family name seems to have encouraged all manner of knaves, dunderheads, and miscreants when time came to label species. Somehow, the northernmost redstart in the Americas didn’t receive the same treatment. Appropriate appellations should respect the birds, not 19th century naturalists and their friends and family.

Each family section starts with a brief description of the birds within that family, their common physical and behavioral traits, and range of habitat. Even during the breeding season the birds appear to be quite unwary of humans.

Brown Pelicans , and the northernmost Brown Booby breeding colony on this side of the Pacific. That larger clade is in turn sister to a clade containing the four remaining totipalmate bird families, which do still seem to be related, and which needed a new order name once pelicans were removed.

The point is, the field guide I grabbed without hesitation was the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America, 7th Edition by Jon L. North America is defined as from north of the Mexican border to the far north, plus “adjacent islands and seas within 200 nautical miles off the coast or offshore islands.”
