It was the advent of lightweight, mirrorless cameras that saw me finally abandon digiscoping, while the Panasonic camera I used didn’t have a great pixel count. Tough, easy to use, great optics – there wasn’t much not to like about the Swarovski except one thing: it was heavy, tipping the scales at around 2000gm.

I’ve seen Yellow Warblers in the low shrubs of Western New York pastures, the river valleys of Missoula, and the trees of abandoned industrial sites in New York City. They are not shy, not given to skulking in dense underbrush or retreating to the crowns of great trees.

And I am inside the southern tip of the western Balkan Dinara-Pindos population range, stretching from Slovenia in the north to Greece in the south, with 2,500 bears. We made our way from our boat’s berth out to and around the tip of Breezy Point, seeing the typical and expected ducks like Long-tailed Duck and Red-breasted Merganser. The islands have long been abandoned and now host heronries in the summer and a horde of gulls in the winter.

The southeast tip of the Florida peninsula is not well endowed with a wide variety of sparrows in winter like the rest of the southeastern United States. The three most common species by far are Savannah Sparrow , Grasshopper Sparrow , and Swamp Sparrow.
