This is a cruise like no other, full of scientific lectures, over forty guides spread out on deck, bird-themed parties, and a lights-off mandate to protect birds at night. The marine protected area status was designated in 2013. After looking through every bar, we concluded that all had abandoned the ship without warning us.

And I am inside the southern tip of the western Balkan Dinara-Pindos population range, stretching from Slovenia in the north to Greece in the south, with 2,500 bears. Like many others, this village was totally abandoned and only recently repopulated, with a current population of only 18 people. Only the Balkan (700 + 2,500 ind.)

The thought of an Oriole foraging in bare winter branches is as foreign as a Petrel on a pool and yet, there it was in my yard picking through an abandoned squirrel’s nest for what appeared to be spiders. Hat-tip to Stella. The truth is, wintering Baltimore Orioles are unusual, but not unheard of, in the southeast. Wicked, right?
