I would be fascinating to know how many species of birds it was pointed at during its time with me, but it must have been well over 1,000. It was the advent of lightweight, mirrorless cameras that saw me finally abandon digiscoping, while the Panasonic camera I used didn’t have a great pixel count.

These two islands are about halfway between the tip of South Africa and Antarctica in the Subantarctic Indian Ocean, have had relatively few human visitors, and are primarily inhabited with some of the rarest seabirds in the world and a smaller number of mammals. Marion has a fascinating history with invasive species.

It’s among a handful of species — American Robin, Black-capped Chickadee , the unholy trinity of House Sparrow – Rock Pigeon – European Starling , a few others — that have been everywhere I’ve ever lived. We never would have gotten all those extra species of Red Crossbill that way.

The southeast tip of the Florida peninsula is not well endowed with a wide variety of sparrows in winter like the rest of the southeastern United States. We are just too far south for any of the above mentioned species, but that is not to say that we do not get any sparrows at all.

There’s no way around it as the various species are reasonably common, and you will surely want to identify them. Plain / unmarked in Savi’s and with distinct pale tips in River. completely overlap in these species, and it is very doubtful they can safely be separated in the field on visuals alone. Or vice versa.

We made our way from our boat’s berth out to and around the tip of Breezy Point, seeing the typical and expected ducks like Long-tailed Duck and Red-breasted Merganser. The islands have long been abandoned and now host heronries in the summer and a horde of gulls in the winter. Can you guess how we spent our time?

If you have been feeding black-oil sunflower and suddenly switch to straight safflower, birds will abandon your feeders.
