On the northern birding calendar, October is a time for sparrows, cool weather, and tired fall leaves. In Costa Rica, the tenth month is when birds pass through in droves. but there are other birds, many stopping to stay, many others moving to South America. In Costa Rica, a lot of those birds fly right overhead.

The essays range widely in place, bird, and voice, though the emphasis is on the North American.

Except in the sad year of 2020, when Lake Cuitzeo had almost entirely dried up by January 1st.) Most years, a day in January of serious birding around Lake Cuitzeo can give me around 85 species. So up north I go, always hoping for a good harvest of year birds. Sure, the dog didn’t count for our eBird list.
