They raise their trunks, sniffing the air.

It is not particularly big but has a reported 430 bird species including migrants, though during my short stay it seems I missed most of the key attractions among them. But it wasn’t four months ago, it was mid-June, 2020, mid-COVID-19 pandemic. The trails may have been buzzing with joggers, dog-walkers, and bikers, but the water was empty. Piney Z Lake is separated by Lake Lafayette by another raised berm – this time with no openings for paddlers. Paddling and birding that morning was a gift.
