I started afforesting our church lot in 2016, just after we were able to fence it. My 2016 efforts began with a generous gift of 43 seedlings from a local botanical garden, representing just the sort of diversity that most reforestation efforts lack. Alas, this is what I must trim.

The Million Dollar Duck (2016) – A Film Review

As a birder, this 72 minute documentary film about the Duck Stamp Contest didn’t accomplish what I was hoping it might – get people excited about the Duck Stamp, or at least wildlife conservation. The film follows several contestants on their journey to win what is described as the “Olympics of Wildlife Art.”

Reed Parrotbill – an unofficial city bird of Shanghai

In 2016, the Shanghai Wildlife Protection Management Station started the search for one, though progress has been slow. This has also made the Reed Parrotbill the symbol of a local initiative to protect the wetlands of Nanhui. I would like to introduce two candidates, a bulbul and a parrotbill.

Nevertheless, in 2016, FWS denied the petition , finding the Golden-cheeked Warbler “has not been recovered, and due to ongoing, widespread destruction of its habitat, the species continues to be in danger of extinction.”
