Way back on 16 May I managed to see my 312 bird species in Queens to add to my Queens list. Somehow I forgot that the last time I predicted what the next ten species I would see in Queens would be was back on 30 December 2013, when my list was sitting at 302. What did I predict back in December of 2013? Good times!

I didn’t know much about Birds of Paradise either before 2013, when I accompanied a non-birding friend to a presentation at a local college, not really expecting much. It includes a table listing the species, subspecies, author and date of original description, which I found quite handy in sorting out the birds. Introduction.

This all started way back in 2012 and several of us continued on in 2013 , 2014 , 2015 and 2016. The black-headed Gouldian Finches have remained in the same area feeding on the grass seeds with the other finches and were our 75th bird for 2017 and the male Gouldian Finch features in the header photo.

Our only records of Pied Herons in the Broome area since we moved here permanently in 1999 are on 24th June 2006, 22nd February 2011, 6th July 2013 and this week on 6th September 2017. The Black-winged Stilt was a juvenile bird and they are another species that has bred very well around the Broome area this year and now dispersed.

The latest edition of the Clements Checklist that I could find, last modified in August 2022, lists 965 species (a little more manageable!), including 355 endemics, 28 introduced species, 6 extinct species, and 77 globally threatened species. There are three to four species on each page, for the most part.

In reverse order, the medals were awarded for “most species seen in a country”, to Australia with 420, USA got the silver, scoring 556 while the runaway winner was Costa Rica with 646 species. Last year, Pat was the only beat invited to the awards ceremony and he swept the board. May I extend my thanks to all the beats.

Claire and Grant went walkabout for 20 FOYs.

Tom and Pat were toe to toe in Costa Rica , so the numbers from there outshone anything else on the list for November, with over 60% of the month’s total shared between them. They birded 6 countries; USA, UK, Costa Rica, Serbia, Australia, and Mexico. El Tapir hummingbird garden.
