Over the winter, the universe lost four whooping cranes to what appears to be recreational shooting: three gunned down together in Georgia on December 30, 2010, and another in Alabama on January 28, 2011. Another 170 are in captivity, many of them breeding stock for reintroduction efforts. Now, it’s time to go to the top. Street, N.W.

I was looking out a car window the other day and noticed that of all the wildlife most of it was bird. The clifftop habitats along rocky shores of the North Atlantic (on both sides of the pond) abound in bird biomass during breeding bouts, for instance. A squirrel skittered by … a squirrel is not a bird.

I was in contact with a group of birders for whom I arranged and guided an annual tour to Africa. Here local hunters had known about the colony and for generations had been harvesting the birds by simply picking the adults off their nests during the breeding season. Is there a solution? If there is, it will certainly be very complex.

Red Knot XS41059 was banded as a 1st year bird on September 11, 2011 near the town of Tain in the Scottish Highlands on the south shore of Dornoch Firth.
