With the EU funds, the restoration started in 2009 when embankments were built to create one large and six more small reservoirs. It was only then that the local farmers learned the soil was too salty for good yields. And all that water and the environmental services coming with it, were lost. A great day, thanks to Clive.

Week four: We wrap up our stay in the US.

The Nisqually estuary was restored in 2009 by removing dikes and reconnecting 762 acres with the tides of Puget Sound. These were my first Fox Sparrows of the year. While most major estuaries in Washington state have been filled, dredged, or developed, Nisqually River’s has been set aside for wildlife.

Proposal 2013-A-7 would split the Sage Sparrow ( Amphispiza belli ) into two species: Great Basin Sage Sparrow ( A. nevadensis ) and California Sage Sparrow ( A. acuflavida ).
