Oddly enough, the Common Redpoll ( Acanthis flammea ), my first ever twitch back in the winter of 2009, was spotted within a mile or so from the Snow Bunting on the same road in McArthur. A very rare find in Northern California.

My personal favorite is the night image of a White-crowned Sparrow beginning a night of migration, the sparrow’s usual bright white-and-black head and brown-patterned body muted by the inky blue darkness, the bill pointing upwards towards the stars. As I said before, the page design is impeccable.

These are neither sparrows, nor finches, but tanagers. Most of these birds are small, finch-like species with thick, conical bills for cracking seeds or eating insects. Odd little grassquits singing from power lines in South America’s great cities. Iconic and amazing Galápagos finches, some of which even learned how to use tools.

Orange-billed Sparrow song from the Caribbean slope. The tinkling Orange-billed Sparrow song from the Pacific slope: Orange-billed Sparrow looks the same pretty much everywhere.

Then the amazing Cassin’s Sparrow in Scotland County this past spring that was a mere prologue to the astounding summer of the Cassin’s Sparrow in many places in the eastern US. Le Conte’s Sparrow – 15 Dec 2012 – This was a self-found life bird at Edgemere Landfill that, frustratingly, did not show up for the Queens Christmas Bird Count the next day. Le Conte’s Sparrow is the bird I was most proud about finding in Queens. Extra sweet because it is a wood-warbler and it was a lifer!
