Diligent detective work leads to discovery of HPAI in dairy cattle

AVMA News

Drs. Barbara Petersen and Drew Magstadt were part of a network of cattle and diagnostic veterinarians who made the connection between cat and bird deaths at Texas dairies and cows getting sick with what turned out to be highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI, more specifically avian influenza Type A H5N1).

A Healthy Dose of Heath

10,000 Birds

I finally managed to explore a new area near Bonn, namely the Wahner Heide (heath) bordering the Cologne-Bonn airport. It’s a quite unique spot in the area due to its sandy soils and typical heathland vegetation (I hear you say “duh, it’s heath…”). I use the phrase “quite unique” just because I’m not sure whether there’s any other heathland in the area, maybe it does not warrant the relativizing “quite” – in which case I apo

My Old Stomping Grounds

10,000 Birds

On Tuesday, my wife and I travelled 1750 miles (2,800 km) from our home of thirty years in Morelia, to the region in which I grew up, the San Mateo Peninsula of the San Francisco Bay Area in California. This is not a birding trip; we are trying to deal with many logistical life issues that have accumulated over the past several years. But will I bird?

Researchers at Hill’s Pet Nutrition and elsewhere have spent decades gathering data about food palatability and investigating why pets have certain taste preferences. Results from this research are helping veterinarians ensure their patients eat and enjoy their food, even those with dietary restrictions, food sensitivities, and health conditions that affect appetite.

A Fierce Cartoon Bird: Steller’s Sea Eagle on Hokkaido

10,000 Birds

Somehow, Steller’s Sea Eagle manages to look both fierce and slightly cartoonish. Maybe the latter is because the bird is so plump, or maybe it is because (at least to me) the head looks like it has been created by a somewhat amateurish wood carver. The species is listed as Vulnerable – the estimated number of individuals is 4600-5100 (HBW), of which about 2000 winter on Hokkaido.

Rock’n’rollers

10,000 Birds

Most birders are familiar with the Spanish dehesas. They might even have a visit to these Mediterranean steppes on their wish list. The Portuguese equivalent would be the montado – a very similar landscape of wide-open plains and scattered oak trees. The dominant oak in the Spanish steppes is the Holm Oak, the Portuguese have Cork Oaks instead. Throw in Iberian Pigs, the odd fighting bull and a few flocks of sheep and the similarities are striking.

Humane rat control?

Reddit Animals

Hello, We have some big fat rats in our backyard. They seem to know each other. They hang out in one of our trees. Ive seen 3. I think they might be taking shelter in an old decrepit shed. Should I be worried about this if they are in the back yard and not the house? At what point do I need to develop a pest control plan? There is no sign of them in the house.

Bunnies won’t go back into burrow

Reddit Animals

Hi y’all! A couple days ago we found a bunny nest in our yard. We fenced it off to keep our dog out but unfortunately our pup wormed his way in yesterday and killed one bunny and did a number on their burrow. I tried to put it back and place the bunny I found near it but it won’t stay there. It’s huddled up against our fence with his sibling. We’re keeping the dog out of the back for now to let them get big.

Can adult birds imprint on humans?

Reddit Animals

I just saw a youtube short of someone who took a wet crow into their home and dried it and fed it and the comments praising the person to the skies sort of rubbed me the wrong way, but I don't want to have any opinion based on lack of knowledge. I know baby birds can imprint easily, and that it is irreversible. But can adult birds also imprint? I tried googling this but I didn't find any adult-specific results.

Animal Idea for project

Reddit Animals

Hello everyone! I know this not usually what you see here but for ceramics I was assigned to make an animal. My friend is doing a cat as a chef “making biscuits” and I wanna do something similar to that, where I connect a habit of an animal to an occupation. My friends suggested a spider knitting, a bird as a singer, or a beaver as a construction worker, but I would like more ideas :)) thanks!

I went magnet fishing yesterday and found a young bird in the creek.

Reddit Animals

It’s head was buried in its own body and it was sitting on a branch. I moved the branch and it started hopping around in the water trying to find new ground to sit on. I eventually grabbed a bigger stick for it to grasp on to and it did. I lifted it out of the water and over the 3 foot cement barrier separating the grass from the water. It was breathing heavy and then buried it’s head once again after I placed it on the dry surface.
