USDA requires HPAI testing for lactating dairy cattle before movement, reporting for all livestock

AVMA News

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is starting to require negative tests for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI, more specifically avian influenza type A H5N1) in dairy cattle before interstate travel. Further, HPAI will become a reportable disease in dairy cattle. Both changes are effective April 29. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also confirmed that it has found remnants of HPAI virus in commercially available milk.

I went magnet fishing yesterday and found a young bird in the creek.

Reddit Animals

It’s head was buried in its own body and it was sitting on a branch. I moved the branch and it started hopping around in the water trying to find new ground to sit on. I eventually grabbed a bigger stick for it to grasp on to and it did. I lifted it out of the water and over the 3 foot cement barrier separating the grass from the water. It was breathing heavy and then buried it’s head once again after I placed it on the dry surface.

Results from this research are helping veterinarians ensure their patients eat and enjoy their food, even those with dietary restrictions, food sensitivities, and health conditions that affect appetite.

Dipping in Guyana

10,000 Birds

Dip (verb): [in birding] to miss seeing a bird you were looking for Many times when we speak about the trips we’ve been on we concentrate on the things we experienced, the ruing of missed opportunities tends to be saved for nighttime conversations after a few drinks perhaps. Visiting Guyana brought with it the unavoidable expectation of seeing some mind boggling species – some endangered, some emblematic, others downright bizarre.

Birding Beyond 60

10,000 Birds

This week, I once again found myself car-challenged. So I went to another nearby site, Las Mesas , which did not offer any unusual narrative. Instead, in this post I will wax philosophical, while sharing a few nice photos from that outing. Clay-colored Sparrows In about a month, I will have my 66th birthday. In between now and then, I will spend a week and a half in California, in the land where birding may mean walking on paved paths, or even on a wooden boardwalk built through the middle of a

Cypriot Delights: Part I

10,000 Birds

I’ve been a regular visitor to the island of Cyprus for over 25 years, making around a dozen trips during this period, every one in search of birds. Tucked away at the extreme eastern end of the Mediterranean, Cyprus is regarded politically as part of Europe, but when it comes to birds it’s very much Middle Eastern in flavour, with a number of species that are hard or even impossible to find in Europe, plus a trio of endemics.

Birding Ruili, Yunnan

10,000 Birds

Ruili is a Chinese city right on the border to Myanmar, and a major border crossing. When I last visited the town almost 10 years ago, it had a Wild West feel, and Wikipedia claims that it is “an important location for trade with Myanmar, in both legal and illegal goods and services” but it seemed pretty tame to me this time. My major struggle in the city was with the equipment in a super modern hotel room, with instructions all in Chinese, preventing me from getting a hot shower and

Rock’n’rollers

10,000 Birds

Most birders are familiar with the Spanish dehesas. They might even have a visit to these Mediterranean steppes on their wish list. The Portuguese equivalent would be the montado – a very similar landscape of wide-open plains and scattered oak trees. The dominant oak in the Spanish steppes is the Holm Oak, the Portuguese have Cork Oaks instead. Throw in Iberian Pigs, the odd fighting bull and a few flocks of sheep and the similarities are striking.

A Fierce Cartoon Bird: Steller’s Sea Eagle on Hokkaido

10,000 Birds

Somehow, Steller’s Sea Eagle manages to look both fierce and slightly cartoonish. Maybe the latter is because the bird is so plump, or maybe it is because (at least to me) the head looks like it has been created by a somewhat amateurish wood carver. The species is listed as Vulnerable – the estimated number of individuals is 4600-5100 (HBW), of which about 2000 winter on Hokkaido.

what do i do with baby bunny

i know in general you’re meant to leave bunnies alone, but i’m very concerned about this one :( today my dog ran up to a bunny nest and there were three babies, and one got so scared she ran into the road. i ran and quickly picked her up and brought her back so she wouldn’t be hit by a car, and when i came back her siblings were gone. she’s so little, even if she’s mobile. i’ve checked back multiple times since it happened (it happened about 10 hours ago) and she’s been alone every time (her sib

Need Help Finding a Home for my Mothers Cats

Reddit Animals

Hello, I hope someone can help me out or point me in the right direction. My mother recently passed and she has two cats and one of which was her baby is very adoptable. She’s an older cat. I put her on the Nextdoor app and a few people told me she’s a Russian blue. She’s about 12 years old. She’s been spayed and her front paws have been declawed (I know that’s not a normal thing now, but back in the day that was fairly normal for people to do that to their cats).
