Another really good feature of Singapore is the excellent public transport system. The dense trees close to the river offered Collared Kingfishers and Sunda Pygmy Woodpecker. Admittedly we did not go into the downtown area once during our three week stay, but wherever there are trees there are birds and Singapore is a green city.

Common Gallinules camouflaged with the denser vegetation, and we were now so close to the woods that we heard Red-bellied Woodpeckers and Common Yellowthroats. I could paddle on the water trail because I not only owned a kayak, but also because I owned a car that could get me to the park – far away from public transportation.

The hotspot chapters close with “How To Get There” by car, public transportation, and bicycle, and “Amenities/Fees”–hours, bathrooms, picnic tables, required passes, fees. I’ve missed this information, especially when I travel to Los Angeles to visit my daughter and her family.

If you happen to find yourself in Melbourne then there are also plenty of places to go birding in the city itself or not far by public transport. Herdsman Lake is easily accessible by public transport, but when we have visited by vehicle we have gone further afield to Yanchep National Park and the Perth Hills. Australian Shelducks.

Taxi v SMRT – The SMRT is the excellent, clean, safe, reliable, cheap transport system of Singapore. The path along the right (east) bank of the river leads along a cycle path with Asian Koels , Yellow-vented Bulbuls , Laced Woodpeckers and Oriental Magpie Robins all likely.

Other species of special significance are herons and egrets (this is very important foraging area), Ferruginous Duck, as well as Lesser Spotted and European Green Woodpeckers , Spotted Flycatcher and the Icterine Warbler. Below are a few suggestions of sites within the city that can easily be reached using public transport. Ruby-crowned Tanager and Fawn-breasted Tanager can be seen here and recently a Blonde-crested Woodpecker has taken up residence and seems to like this area. There is no transport inside the park and all travel must be on foot.

Rather than the usual dismal waiting area there were comfortable seats and drinks, and when our transports arrived, we were placed in two large four wheel drives rather than one, so that we wouldn’t feel cramped. We arrived at the rather untouristy seasite town of Lahad Datu where our guide dropped us off at the office of the lodge.

TRANSPORTATION. Red-crowned Woodpecker. Lineated Woodpecker. Crimson-crested Woodpecker. In fact, we saw two species of monkey, our only sloths, lots of coatis, and my rarest ever mammal sighting—a Jaguarundi —right on site. All in all, the Radisson Summit delivered what we all wanted. No identified trogons though?
