Unlike Sanderlings, their legs were yellow, and they were distinctively a plover species. Not satisfied with a mere two species, I embarked on a later walk down the beach with my grandmother and mother (the dream birding team!). Now, thousands of miles away, I was looking at a member of the same species, a Wilson’s Plover !

This is a bird that flew over 3,400 miles in one flight from Brazil to South Carolina, an amazing bird that is representative of every other Whimbrel. I agreed to drive if he agreed to tally the road birds, and just over three hours after we left Durham we rolled up to the west end of Twin Lake, not more than a steroid enhanced stone’s throw from the South Carolina border. And upon exiting we were treated to supremely satisfying views of a pair of young Roseate Spoonbills.

Almost any park, even within large cities such as New Orleans and Atlanta, will host such quintessentially common Nearctic species such as Field , Song , Chipping , and White-throated Sparrow in good numbers. We are just too far south for any of the above mentioned species, but that is not to say that we do not get any sparrows at all.

Of course, I’m speaking of the mysterious Wood Stork , Mycteria americana , the only representative of that famous family to regularly occur north of the Mexican border and present in large numbers along the northern coast of South Carolina, where I found myself a couple weekends back. A denizen of the brackish shallows all along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts regularly found as far north as South Carolina. It is, of course, the Florida Scrub-Jay.
