Tell me, what happens if we rip away hunting when hunting protects more wildlife land in Africa than national parks? Animal rights is concerned with individual animals, and their suffering and welfare. Conservation is concerned about protecting populations, species, habitats, ecosystems. And that lions are really cute.

Galápagos: A Natural History, Second Edition by John Kricher and Kevin Loughlin gives the traveling naturalist the tools needed to fully appreciate and experience the Galápagos Islands. Still, I wish I had prepared. I wish I had read this book. I also think there are chapters where the photographs crowd out the text.

If birders are willing to spend so much money in the pursuit of birds, it seems some would be willing to spend some on protecting them as well…right? They have suffered from competition with Blue-winged Warblers (including hybridizing), forest succession, and parasitism by Brown-headed Cowbirds. Shocking, I know.

It’s also nice to read about protected areas, different habitats, and more information about each bird especially when you don’t have to worry about more pages adding more weight to your field pack. I foresee it as a useful tool to prepare for a trip as well as during birding time in Costa Rica. __.

In other words, 21st century “geocentric” conservation must be concerned about the welfare of individual animals (traditionally termed animal welfare, or animal protection) and the welfare of wild populations (the traditional focus of progressive conservation). All attempts to domesticate wild animals should be discouraged.
