Bird Counts and Cold Fronts in Costa Rica

At Cano Negro, the stormy weather gave us a few birds rarely if ever seen at this inland freshwater wetland complex; Laughing Gulls , a Sandwich Tern , and two Brown Pelicans ! Despite rain during part of the day, the other teams also did very well and we ended up with a final overall tally of more than 270 species. Just kidding!

Isla Isabel – Mexico’s Galapagos

One of the sheltered bays on Isla Isabel. It is easy to know when the boat is nearing its destination because the skies start filling with ever-increasing numbers of Heerman’s Gulls , various booby species, Red-billed Tropicbirds and the ubiquitous Magnificent Frigatebirds. A young frigate within arms-length of the photographer.

Bloody Bay Birding

The bay itself is fairly large and sheltered from the elements, and one of the larger rivers draining the Main Ridge Forest Reserve empties into the bay on the northern end. The confluence of fresh and salt water creates a small, nutrient-rich hideaway that is used by various species of fish as a nursery. Royal Tern.

We soon positioned ourselves in the shelter to watch the birdlife and there was no denying it was a hot and dry day and the shade was appreciated.

Melbourne to Beaumaris along the coast

As I continued south I stopped at each small jetty to see which species were roosting and the sea was substantially rougher than on my previous visit. There are a lot of small sheltered bays along the coast and you can choose to walk along the beach or promenade. Australian Pelican. Black-winged Stilt at St Kilda.
